[Ars Technica] Pokemon Go Fest’s blunders result in class-action lawsuit

#

Ouch, Niantic, you really messed up this time….

Although personally I would have thought with all the events you have done for Ingress (anomalies, etc.) you would have figured out the best way to handle this.

Although, saying that, there are FAR more PGO fans than there are Ingress fans….

What could go wrong other than spotty Internet, huge lines, and a server meltdown?

Disastrous 'Pokémon Go' Fest ends with anger and refunds [Mashable]

#

“Niantic was not prepared.”

No they weren’t, not by a long shot.

The game itself was a nice start. Getting people out and about. When the update went out that locked out jailbroken/rooted devices, it meant I could no longer play (still can’t, although I can get the app to load and login, but never get a GPS signal, even though I’m happily able to play other AR games like Ingress. And I’m only L22 if I remember, so way behind most active players now)

'The Sims' is finally coming to your iPhone and Android phones

The Sims - as in the PROPER Sims being made for Android/iOS? Definitely going to look at this, but I bet it’s going to be online only which is pointless when your main commute is Underground.

How to trust no-one in the deep dark world of space – kinda also reflects real life.

I need to figure out how to play this game properly (I have it on Steam and like the graphics, but the controls are really frustrating….)

Do you want to play a game? Ransomware asks for high score instead of money | Ars Technica

#

A new randomware was doing the rounds, but rather than paying to unlock, it's asking for a high score in a bullet-hell (think Touhou Project) game. The game is fun anyway, but would you be willing to play it to get your files? High stakes :)

Creator apologizes for a “joke” that really requires expert play to unlock files.

FINAL FANTASY 30TH ANNIVERSARY – Timeless Legacy Trailer - YouTube

#

Has it really been 30 years since Final Fantasy first graces our TV screens? Wow. And all these different versions – not including spin-offs (X-2 , XIII-2, Mystic Quest, and Lightning Returns) and expansions (FFXIV’s Heavensward and upcoming Stormblood, for example) are not included. But the franchise has been going for 3 decades and doesn’t look like it’s stopping any time soon :)

Abra

#

If you have played the original Pokemon games, you’ll know Abra was a headache to catch, using Teleport to escape at its first opportunity. The only way to stop this was to either catch him on your first go, or use a skill that would stop him using that move - such as one that induces sleep.

In GO, he still makes an appearance, but will escape at his first opportunity. I managed to hatch one out of an egg while I was at home:

And this morning, at Victoria Rail Station, managed to find (and catch) a wild one. A lot weaker than the one out of the egg, but still :D

My technique was to use a Great Ball (have picked up a ton of those recently) and curveball him. Managed to get a curveball + nice bonus this way.

Tower of London

#

The Tower of London. A great tourist attraction. Great history…. and a bloody Magikarp nest.

Still can’t complain, picked up a couple of Dratinis here (not enough to call it a Dratini nest) and also picked up the infamous Pikachu. Pikachu is the only Pokemon in the game that I have encountered so far that actually uses a voice rather than computer-generated screeches and squeals for its signature call.

It's true, 'Pokémon Go' is becoming a fitness craze

#

It turns out that there's an amazing side effect to joining the ranks of the millions now addicted to Pokémon Go: better health.
Fitness tracker Jawbone UP claims that users of its fitness band who also mentioned that they used Pokémon Go logged a whopping 62.5 percent more steps this weekend compared to their steps taken during a normal weekend.

As someone who is a runner, I can confirm this thing is like Ingress – encouraging you to go to new places or making you treat pokestops and gyms as milestones - which is great for interval training. I’m running circles around my local area, stopping by at three different pokestops each loop :)

Currently Level 12 with about 251 pokemon caught, 47 unique ones seen, and 47 active in my bag.

How To Install Steam on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS - OMG! Ubuntu!

Steam was one of the many things that broke with Ubuntu 16.04 because of numerous changes in package names and dependencies. Fortunately, here’s a guide to fix that. Now, back to my Dungeon Defenders :D

Tinkering

#

Looks like my weekend is going to be filled with tinkering again. ^_^;

I need to reinstall windows on my laptop as I think there must be some graphics conflict somewhere and it’s lagging when it gets taxed (didn’t normally). Most commonly, it happens when I’m playing Final Fantasy XIV, but has lagged a bit on Alice: Madness Returns and Hyperdimension Neptunia U: Action Unleashed. I figured it might be my connection, since FFXIV is an MMORPG, so I switched from my WiFi to my 4G connection via tethering and it still lags. I then switched from DirectX 9 to DirectX 11, amd still nothing. I even downgraded my Nvidia driver to a REALLY old version (since Nvidia ran into a huge bug with one of their drivers, if you recall), so I’m planning to run my Clonezilla backup tonight (which should take a few hours since I’m also backing up my Ubuntu install), and then run my Windows install then then boot-repair to get grub back (凸(>皿<)凸 Microsoft)

And then, I have to go through the process of installing drivers and updating Windows, though I will probably skip updating Windows since I only use it as a gaming environment. And downloading my Steam games again. Including the Heavensward expansion, Final Fantasy XIV is probably about 20-30GB. With the spikes and dips in download speed on my 4G, it’s going to take about 3 hours.

Monty Oum

The name may not mean much to some people, but to some, he is a well-known game animator, producing hugely popular shorts and series such as RWBY and my favourite, Dead Fantasy – a cross between Dead or Alive and Final Fantasy. It has been reported that he has passed away due to an allergic reaction during a medical procedure that put him in a coma.

Here is the blog entry detailing the news: roosterteeth.com/members/j…

And in case you haven’t seen his work, here is Dead Fantasy (all the parts spliced together)
